Flip Oakes Wild Thing Trumpet

The Wild Thing is fairly large at .470 bore, but the biggest difference to other trumpets is the bell flare, which is enormous.

This photo shows the Wild Thing (top), 1980's design Yamaha 6335HS (middle) and 1930's design Beuscher Truetone (bottom). You can see how trumpet bell throats have got bigger

Here are some close ups of the Wild Thing Trumpet bell:

"Never mind the quality, feel the width!"

I find the Wild Thing to be a very forgiving instrument. It has quite wide slots which makes it very good for improvising on. It also works with any mouthpiece. Some trumpets I have had have not been happy on shallow or deep mouthpieces but the Wild Thing plays on anything, just the sound changes. I am osing the Monette 1-5M Prana mostly and the Monette B6L for lead playing and both work equally well. It is very good in the upper register with lots of stability.
