About our project

World ChallengeThe project is organised through World Challenge who are experts at helping School groups work in developing countries.

Once we're in India we spend two days of acclimatisation. We, the challengers will head to Kochi, a historic town with remnants of its Portuguese, Dutch and English past visible everywhere. Here we will start to acclimatise by completing a day walk, taking in some of the ancient mosques, synagogues and giant fishing nets that Fort Knochi is famous for! This is so we become familiar with the climate, culture, what to do if & the all important rules and regulations.

For the next 5-6 days is the main trekking phase in the green hills of the Western Ghats, around Munnar. The trek passes through forests, lakes, tea plantations and spice-growing regions. Teams will learn about the various spices and how they are grown and cooked in the area. The trek goes through many local villages, allowing for lots of cultural interaction and unique insight into the Keralan way of life.

The project we will complete will last 7 days. The project phase in Kerala, either in a rural school, orphanage or national park could include helping to paint classrooms, mend furniture or paint murals. Basic construction work will also be completed, such as building and plastering brick walls or constructing a playground. Teams will most likely be staying in the school or local communities.

After all this tough & challenging work we will have a deserved rest and relaxation phase. This will be spent relaxing on the Keralan back waters where we can take a houseboat (Kettuvallam) on the intricate system of rivers, lagoons, paddy fields and coconut groves. Here we will be able to spot diverse bird life and enjoy an unusually laid back peaceful way of Indian life. In June we will be able to watch the famous boat races that take place each year around Alleppey. Cookery, yoga and Ayurvedic courses are all offered along the coast as well.
